SoBran is seeking a Facility Manager at Old Dominion University (ODU) in Norfolk, Virginia.

OVERVIEW:  Responsibilities of this position are that of a Facility Manager for the ODU CompMed, Animal Care Project. These responsibilities include all activities required for the proper care and maintenance of on-site animals. This is a proposed effort.

Responsibilities include:

  • Understands and follows all SOPs and Quality Assurance Standards.  Aids in writing needed SOPs

  • Responsible for assisting Project/Program Manager with operational management support

  • Ensures that staff assigned to each position are trained and proficient with SOPs, policies and guidelines associated with their position.  Expectation of familiarity with day-to-day activities, personnel needs and facility issues
  • Ensures animals are cared for and maintained in accordance with Animal Welfare Regulations, U.S. Public Health Service Policy on the Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, and the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals

  • Maintain an effective level of communication with the Project/Program Manager
  • Distributes reports as needed to SoBran staff, PI staff and institutional personnel
  • Assists in developing and maintaining relationships with investigators, their staff, maintenance personnel and SoBran personnel in order to coordinate activities.
  • Assists in personnel matters in collaboration with supervisory staff to include, but not limited to annual reviews and disciplinary issues
  • Assists as needed with interviewing and selection of SoBran personnel
  • Responsible for ordering food and other supplies for the facility
  • Must be able to lift a maximum of 50 lbs; bend, stoop, climb and stand for a prolonged period
  • Create and maintain animal database in accordance to site expectations

  • Prepare, process and approve orders for laboratory animals and supporting supplies

  • Project, prepare, monitor and maintain department budget

  • Perform any other duties as assigned

Education Required: Expectation of A.A. in Veterinary Technology or B.S. in Biology, Animal Science or related discipline and LATG level or equivalent training or experience

Experience Required:

  • Must have experience working with multiple animal species.  Ensures animals are cared for and maintained in accordance with Animal Welfare Regulations, U.S. Public Health Service Policy on the Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, and the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals

  • Must possess strong verbal communication, teaching skills and be knowledgeable of veterinary medical terminology and animal facility operations

  • 4 years experience in a laboratory animal facility, 2 of which are in a supervisory position.  Must have experience with husbandry and technical support of rodent/swine/rabbit facilities, barrier management, hazard containment, technical proficiency and data management.  Must have knowledge and understanding for industry specific work place safety and accident prevention techniques.  Must be well organized, able to plan, and have good time management skills.  Must be able to work in a team environment and be adaptable.
